Hi Mary Myers here,

My aim is to help you relieve your stress levels so that you can enjoy your children rather than fight with them. If you are having huge issues trying to control your toddler’s tantrums then I suggest you use the resources of an expert like Dr Blaise Ryan.

So to help you get started check out the 5 tips below on how to handle toddler tantrums:

Is your toddler driving you insane by throwing constant temper tantrums? Are you too embarrassed to take your kid out in public fearing their yelling, crying, whining and erratic behavior?  Just remember that your child is still growing up after all, and that having a tantrum is their way of expressing themselves. Nevertheless here are some tips on how to deal with kids tantrums.

Tip 1: Find the Root Cause of Your Kid’s Tantrum

Why is your toddler throwing a tantrum in the first place? Are they feeling tired or hungry? Has your child had their afternoon nap yet? Are you walking around your local shopping centre window shopping, totally oblivious to the fact that your kid is tired and requires sleep? Give your child some food and water and put them to bed.

Tip 2: Completely Ignore Your Child

Ignoring your child is obviously easier said than done as your first instinct will always be to care for your kid. However this can be an effective method when dealing with kids tantrums, because during your toddlers temper tantrum they are totally out of control and lose their minds. As such whatever you do or say to them they will not react positively and in fact will display quite the opposite in behavior. Wait until they have calmed down before talking to them. Just make sure that there is nothing around they can pick up to throw or remove any objects away from them that could possibly cause them harm.

Tip 3: Be Calm When Dealing With Kids Tantrums

When dealing with kids tantrums you must remain calm. Far too often, parents easily get a hot temper themselves when they see that their child is misbehaving. The problem with doing this is that your bad temper does not actually create the desired effect; which is to calm your child down. Think about it, how is your toddler going to calm down if you yourself are not?

Tip 4: Do Not Give in To Kids Tantrums

Whatever you do, don’t give in to your kid’s tantrum. Do not reward them if they are throwing a temper tantrum. You cannot condone their bad behavior otherwise they will keep doing it. No matter how bad your child is crying, whinging or yelling do not reward them with what they want such as lollies, toys or attention. Only reward them after they have calmed down and displaying appropriate behavior.

Tip 5: Get Your Kid Out of There or Change Their Focus of Attention

Another way of stopping a toddler tantrum is to remove your kid from the scene of the crime. For example if your child is having a fit at the supermarket because they can’t have their candy or toy, take them immediately out of the store or to another aisle. This can effectively break them out of their behavior. Kids have a short attention span so another take on this method is to distract them with something else. For example you could pick up a big box of cereal and say “WOW look at this son!” and then let them hold onto it.

To stop toddler tantrums, as a parent you really need to know how to do it properly. Throwing your own temper tantrum will not work. You need to have the right tools so that you are teaching your child, not harming them when you discipline their behavior.  A great tool I recommend is The Happy Child Guide by Ashley Ryan which is a great source of child temper tantrum stopping information. It contains several surprisingly easy techniques that you can implement immediately to help control your toddler and ease your own stress. Read the The Happy Child Guide review to find out more…
