Do you find that you have a hitting 2 year old and don’t know how to stop him or her? Has your child started to hit everyone from kids to adults? A hitting 2 year old hits because they cannot verbally communicate yet. They find that hitting can cause a reaction and therefore keep doing it. For example if they want to get someone to play with them they may hit you or another kid. Whether it is a good or bad response they are fascinated by getting a reaction. Below are a few tips to help you stop a hitting 2 year old.

Tip 1: Teach And Then Ignore

When your child hits, immediately educate him or her that hitting is wrong. If you are playing with your 2 year old who then hits you say something like “Hitting hurts people, I am not playing with you anymore because you hit me”. After you say this immediately ignore your child. Do your own thing and pretend that your hitting 2 year old is invisible. Your child will learn that hitting will not help them get what they want anymore.

Tip 2: Praise the Good and Discipline the Bad

When your child is displaying good behaviour such as drawing a picture, or helping mummy hang the clothes, praise your child. Congratulate him with “That’s a Great Drawing” or thank her with “Thanks you’re doing such a terrific job honey”. Do this throughout the day. If they hit you, take hold of your child’s arm, discipline him or her with a firm “Stop hitting, you’re not allowed to hit people”. This helps your child understand what good behaviour is and what bad behaviour is.

Tip 3: Be Consistent

Many parents give up after trying one type of method to discipline a hitting 2 year old. You need to persist with that method. It might work the first time if you are lucky but more often than not you need to consistently apply that method for a few weeks before your child gets used to it and responds in a positive manner.

Disciplining a hitting 2 year old requires that you educate your child and help them distinguish good behaviour from bad behaviour. You also need to consistently apply a child disciplining technique that works both for you and your child.
