3 Tips to Stop Child Biting

It is common for children under 3 to bite. This could be due to a wide range of reasons. Teething is a familiar reason for child biting. Another common reason for child biting is the fact that toddlers do this to express themselves. Either way do not think that there is something wrong with your child. Tip 1: Why is Your Child Biting?

Understand why your child is biting. Is your child teething? If this is the case give them a teething ring to help soothe their gums. Is your child biting when there are other children around? Kids love copying other kids. If they see a kid bite they will copy them. Are they biting the same person such as mum or dad? Your kid may be biting to get your attention? Finding out the reason for why your kid is biting will help to stop child biting.

Tip 2: Discipline Your Child Straight Away

Your child must understand what is acceptable and unacceptable behaviour. So if you see your kid biting someone or another kid, discipline them straight away. Let him or her know with a strong tone in your voice that biting is not acceptable. Reward them when they show good behaviour by clapping or communicating to them for acting appropriately. Showing them what is good behaviour helps stop child biting and reduces bad behaviour.

Tip 3: Separate Your Child From the Other Child

If your child has bitten another child it is a good idea to separate them both. The biting incident would have upset both children so they will each require attention. For the child that was bitten, offer them comfort and first aid if required. For the child that bit the other child, take him or her away from the situation. In a strict tone say something like “No you should not bite. It will hurt others”.

To stop child biting you need to understand why your child bit in the first place and then discipline them immediately.
