So you want to know how to discipline a defiant child? Many parents are at a complete loss when trying to tame a disobedient child. Their first reaction is to yell, reprimand, threaten or even spank their kids. Unfortunately you discover that these methods simply don’t work. Here are some tips to help you discipline a defiant child.
Tip 1: Consistency
It can be difficult to apply consistency in your discipline methods, especially when grandparents are also involved in looking after your child. But it is important that your child is disciplined consistently by all carers. Otherwise they will behave when you are around but then be mischievous with grandma because she is more lenient on your child’s defiant behaviour.
Tip 2: Look Your Kid in the Eyes
Parents will often yell across the room or have their backs turned when they discipline a defiant child. You will be more effective when you are up close to your child, look them in the eyes and issue a firm NO when they display inappropriate behaviour.
Tip 3: Do Not Repeat Yourself All The Time
Issue a command, then repeat it once only, attached with a caution of the penalties that will result with further defiance. If your child still does not obey then discipline them with the penalties that you had warned them about.
Learning how to discipline a defiant child can take some time, effort and education. However, done in the right way you can help your child bring to an end their tantrum behaviour.
